Summer Camp Information

Summer training is available to cadets, and is made up of courses ranging in length from a few days up to 6 weeks. Courses may be virtual, in-person or virtual, with focuses on leadership, drill and ceremonial, fitness and sports, marksmanship, music, and expedition training. There are no fees or charges to attend summer training, like the rest of the Cadet Program. Cadets will be provided with food, board and transportation.

Cadet Activity Program (CAP) courses for more junior 337 Queen's York Rangers Cadets are primarily held locally. More advanced programs will be held at Cadet Training Centres (CTCs) throughout Canada.

Applications for summer courses are done in February, and selections start being given out April. Most cadets who apply are selected for summer courses, but due to limited availability, not all cadets may be selected. Cadets are selected on the basis of attendance, cadet level, previous courses, and training performance.

List of Summer Courses

Many summer courses are available to cadets. Cadets can only attend one course each summer. All the courses, and their requirements, are outlined in below. To be eligible for a summer course, new cadets must join the cadet program prior to 31 January of that year. As a general guide, courses are based on the Star Level completed as of June of that year:

CAP-1 is a 4-day, daily drop-off, activity program designed for 12–13-year-olds. It is intended to build confidence and facilitate meeting other cadets through participation as a member of a peer-lead team in fun, safe, challenging, and well-organized activities.

The Digital Learning Center courses are conducted virtually using Cadets365 and enable the cadet to participate in summer training from their local area or home. Cadets will need at a minimum a reliable internet connection and a laptop/tablet device capable of virtual meetings or assignments.

Cadet Administration and Supply Assistant Course (CASA)

The aim of this two-week course is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be an administrative and supply assistant at the Corps, during regionally directed activities, and/or as a staff cadet at a CAP/CTC. The aim of this course will be accomplished by providing dynamic and challenging training that includes opportunity for practical application. The cadets will learn the theoretical and technical skills required to assist the Corps Administration and Supply Officers.

Cadet Correspondent Course

The Cadet Correspondent course is a 5-session course where the cadets learn the basics of supporting Public Affairs. The modules include how to effectively use social media, take a great photo, and become a storyteller of the corps/squadron. The cadet will need a device to capture imagery for use during the course.

Cadet Cyber Training Course

The Cadet Cyber Training Coursewill be conducted over the course of 2 weeks. Cadets will be immersed into the work of Cyber Security, learning, and securing multi-platform operating systems (Windows and Ubuntu) and interact with CAF/COATS Cyber Educators. Training provided will help cadets develop the Cyber Defence skills required to compete in an online competition with other groups from across the world at the end of the course. Successful participants will acquire the skill set to lead and support cadets in virtual and cyber activities within the CCO.

Expedition Team Member (ETM) Course (2 weeks in-person)

The aim of this course is to provide cadets with the fundamentals of expedition training, building upon what has been taught in Silver Star of the Corps program. This aim will be accomplished through the development of knowledge and skills, and the provision of ample opportunity for practical application. By establishing a dynamic learning environment that exposes the cadets to the various aspects of a 5-day Expedition, this course will inspire the cadets to further pursue Expedition training opportunities at the Corps and on the Expedition Team Leader Course.

Drill & Ceremonial Instructor (DCI) Course (4 weeks HYBRID: 1 week distributed learning, 3 weeks in-person)

The aim of this course is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be an instructor for drill and ceremonial activities. The aim will be accomplished by further developing drill and ceremonial related specialist skills and knowledge that will allow them to perform the duties of a specialist instructor for ceremonial activities. By establishing a dynamic learning environment that exposes the cadets to a variety of drill and ceremonial opportunities, this course will prepare the cadets to assume a specialist parade position at the Corps and CTCs.

Fitness and Sports Instructor (FSI) Course (4 weeks HYBRID: 1 week distributed learning, 3 weeks in-person)

The aim of this course is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to perform the role of a fitness and sports instructor and a team leader for fitness and sports activities conducted at the Corps, during regionally directed activities and/or as a staff cadet at a CAP/CTC. The aim of the course will be accomplished by providing dynamic and challenging training that includes ample opportunity for practical application. The cadets will learn theoretical and technical skills required to deliver the Corps physical education and recreational training program as specialist instructors. This course will ensure that the cadets are adequately prepared to face challenges at the Corps and as Staff Cadets at the CTC

Music Course - Military Band (MB) (4 weeks HYBRID: 1 week distributed learning, 3 weeks in-person)

The aim of this course is to raise the cadet’s musical skills to the standard of the next music proficiency level. This training is to develop the music proficiency of cadets and prepare them to support their Corps bands and related music activities. During this course, instruction is also given in instrument maintenance & repair and other music-related skills, while the more senior levels also learn some Instructional Techniques relating to music.

Note: To improve music proficiency level, cadets may undertake this course more than once.

Air Rifle Marksmanship Instructor (ARMI) Course (4 weeks HYBRID: 1 week distributed learning, 3 weeks in-person)

The aim of this course is to develop individual air rifle marksmanship and summer biathlon specialty skills while reinforcing and further developing the leadership and instructional techniques skills preparing the cadets to support these two specialty activities at the Corps, during regionally directed activities and/or as a staff cadet at a CAP/CTC. The cadet will be provided with the necessary theoretical, technical, and practical skills required to monitor and instruct other cadets during marksmanship training at the Corps

Full-bore Marksman Phase 1 (FB1) Course (4 weeks in-person)

The aim of this course is to develop a specialist with the attitude, skills and subject matter knowledge required to participate in competitive full-bore marksmanship as an individual competitor. The cadet will be provided with the necessary theoretical, technical, and practical skills required to participate as a Fullbore rifle competitor. The cadet will participate in the Canadian National Cadet Full-bore Competition.

Expedition Team Leader (ETL) Course (4 weeks HYBRID: 1 week distributed learning, 3 weeks in-person)

The aim of this course is to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be an instructor and team leader for Expedition activities within the Army cadet program. The aim will be accomplished by providing dynamic and challenging training that offers ample opportunity for practical application during extended Expeditions. The cadets will learn advanced theoretical and technical skills required to assist in the delivery of Expedition Training at the Corps. This course will ensure the cadets are adequately prepared to face challenges at the Corps and as staff cadets.

Additional Prerequisites:

Must be medically and physically fit,
Have achieved minimum the Bronze Level of the Cadet Fitness Assessment Incentive Level

Be motivated to pursue outdoor leadership and adventure training activities.

Mountain Bike Instructor (MBI) (2 weeks in-person)

The aim of this course is develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be a Mountain Bike Instructor within the Army Cadet program. The aim will be accomplished by providing dynamic and challenging training that offers ample opportunity for practical application. The cadets will learn advanced theoretical and technical skills required to assist in the delivery of Mountain Bike Training at the Corps and Cadet Expedition Sites.

Additional Prerequisites:

Must be medically and physically fit,
Have no participation limitations which may preclude them from participating in intense level adventure training activities in remote locations and in high altitudes,
Have achieved minimum the Bronze Level of the Cadet Fitness Assessment Incentive Level

Be motivated to pursue outdoor leadership and adventure training activities.

Canadian Forces Basic Parachutist Course (5 weeks in-person)

Unique to Army Cadets, this course aims to develop a specialist with the skills and subject matter knowledge required to be a CAF Basic Paratrooper and earn their "wings." The aim will be accomplished by cadet undertaking the Canadian Armed Forces Basic Parachutist Course with the Canadian Forces Advanced Land Warfare Centre. Cadets are selected for this highly competitive course based on their achievements in the program and their physical fitness. There is a minimum fitness requirement all candidates must achieve.

INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE - Maple Leaf Exchange

The aim of this six-week exchange is to introduce cadets to the training of the Army Cadet Force in the United Kingdom in Wales, Scotland and England. This exchange will also provide cadets an opportunity to participate in cultural activities and touring.

Additional Prerequisites:

Cadet must be 16 years of age prior to exchange start date.

Have achieved at the minimum the Bronze Level of the Cadet Fitness Assessment Incentive Level at the male/female 16 year old standard.

Have good interpersonal skills.

Functional in English

Be the rank of Sgt or above prior to exchange start date

Documents required to support a Staff Cadet Application:

Letter of introduction from their Corps/Sqn CO (Commanding Officer)
Letter of interest from the cadets applying, reflecting their cadet training experience, leadership experience and confirm their language proficiency in both official languages.

Staff Cadet - IT-SMC OJT

As an IT-SMC Staff Cadet you will receive on-the-job training to assist the summer Cadet training program with information technology needs.

Additional Prerequisites:

Cadet must be 16 years of age prior to serial start date

Cadet must have an interest in information technology

DATES:

Staff Cadet – CTC & CAP (1 – 7 weeks)

Ranging between one and seven weeks, staff cadets are the Non-Commissioned Officers of the Summer CAP sites and CTCs. A staff cadet can assist the officer staff with the instruction and supervision of cadets or may be tasked in an administrative or logistical support role.

Rank and pay for staff cadets depend upon the position; this is usually determined during a pre- course training and evaluation period.

Staff Cadet - National Cadet Advisory Council (NCAC)

An in-person opportunity hosted by the Commander Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers (CJCR) over a six-week training period. This working group will provide the opportunity for the Commander and senior staff at the headquarters to engage directly with a group of senior cadets from across the country on a variety of cadet program related topics.

Additional Prerequisites:

Cadet must be 16 years of age prior to serial start date.
Priority may be given to cadets who are bilingual in both official languages.

Cadets applying for the NCAC must submit all required documents.

APPLICATION DEADLINE for all other camps: 7 Mar 2023 to Capt D. Ferris via REMIND
Applications will be placed into priority ranking as per the CO’s direction.
Offers will be sent to the Fortress system on 30 April 23.
Offers will be sent to cadets via REMIND (be sure your account name in REMIND is the Cadet's name).
Offers must be sent back ASAP either accepted or rejected.
